A Compact Engineering Challenge: the First Girder of Elettra 2.0
|
A girder is the mechanical support structure on which the magnets (dipoles, quadrupoles, etc.) are mounted and aligned.
It ensures stability, rigidity, and micrometric precision in the positioning of the magnets along the ring or the beamline. This type of girder will be installed in strategic points of the storage ring, immediately before and after the short sections hosting accelerating cavities or insertion devices. Its design highlights one of the major challenges of Elettra 2.0: arranging magnets in extremely limited spaces. Unlike conventional solutions, there is not enough room here to accommodate standard coils, which required a complete rethinking of the magnet design. |

The engineers came up with an innovative solution: magnets whose magnetic length is equal to or even greater than their total mechanical length. This was achieved by extending the pole ends longitudinally and combining them with more compact, specially arranged windings. The result is a reduced footprint without sacrificing performance. |
