The New Power Converters of Elettra 2.0: Efficiency, Stability and Innovation

In recent days, with the delivery of the final batch of power converters for the corrector magnets, the supply of 1.296 converters has been completed, 1.252 of which will be installed in the new Elettra2.0 light source.

These devices are next-generation AC/DC-AC energy recovery converters, capable of ensuring efficiency, accuracy and stability levels that exceed the standards required by the new accelerator physics. During a 100-hour cold test, their long-term stability settled below 20 ppm/FS, an outstanding result that goes well beyond the specified requirements.

Another distinctive feature is the real-time communication interface, which enables the monitoring of vital device parameters and the implementation of advanced prognostic capabilities. When combined with artificial intelligence tools, this functionality will allow early detection of potential failures, significantly enhancing the operational reliability of the infrastructure.
Furthermore, their internal modular design helps reducing costs for maintenance, as different converters share the same parts, minimizing warehouse stocks.

All R&D, engineering and design phases were carried out entirely by the Power Converters team at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, while serial production was entrusted to an external industrial partner.

The converters were supplied by Italian companies and, in particular, those for the multipole magnets and correctors were produced by two companies based in Trieste, highlighting the significant economic impact of the ongoing project on the local area.
