Elettra 2.0 Works in Full Progress

Since July 3, the day after the beam of Elettra was switched off, the Elettra 2.0 construction site has been moving forward rapidly, following the established schedule. Removal activities have already made it possible to complete several key phases, freeing up large areas for the next operations.
The roof slabs of the storage ring have been removed, an essential step to facilitate access from above and the handling of the largest components. The radiofrequency cavities—the heart of the acceleration system—were the first to be dismantled from the ring and will be reused in Elettra 2.0. The appointed company has also removed kilometers upon kilometers of cables, an extensive and meticulous task that affected the entire machine’s network of connections. At the same time, the service hall has been completely cleared of existing equipment, with the exception of the devices that will be reused in Elettra 2.0, which have been properly protected. With these operations nearly completed, the dismantling of the undulators—essential devices—is already underway, with their gradual removal from the ring. The construction site represents a profound transformation for Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, and its progress demonstrates the speed at which spaces are being prepared to host the new machine. Each completed phase marks a tangible step forward toward Elettra 2.0, with the goal of meeting the project timeline and ensuring both the full efficiency of operations and the timely restart of the user program. |
