Elettra Fellows (Press review)

Yesterday evening, Helga Nowotny, Hans Chang, and Robert-Jan Smits were awarded the title of Elettra Fellow, which is attributed every year to internationally-renowned scientists and administrators by the Board of Directors of Elettra – Sincrotrone Trieste.

“All of the award recipients – explained Elettra’s president Carlo Rizzuto during the award ceremony – have played crucial roles in the field of European scientific cooperation, and as part of its internationalization efforts, our Company is glad to acknowledge and celebrate their key contributions to the construction of the European Research Area and the development of European research infrastructure.”
Helga Nowotny is the President of the European Research Council, one of the most important European research institutions.  She has taught and carried out research in numerous prestigious academic institutions, including Columbia University in New York City and the Zurich Polytechnic. She has authored many publications and books which greatly contributed to the debate on the relationship between science and technology, including “Naked Genes: Reinventing the Human in the Molecular Age”, written together with Giuseppe Testa and published by MIT Press in 2011 (published in Italy by Codice in 2012).
Robert-Jan Smits, Director-General of DG Research and Innovation at the European Commission, is responsible for defining and developing European policies and programmes on research and innovation. He strongly supported the establishment of the European Research Council and ESFRI, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (established in2002 to encourage the formation of a European network of research infrastructure that could channel the contributions of individual countries into a shared development and innovation strategy).
Hans Chang, Director of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, is an internationally-renowned physicist who made major contributions to the establishment of the European Research Area and the development of European Research policies, especially as the president of ESFRI during its launch, and as the vice-president of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Global Science Forum and the European Union of Physics Research Organizations.
