The scientific collaboration between Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and India has received an important institutional recognition in the framework of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Italy on 19–20 May 2026. In the Joint Declaration signed by the two Heads of Government, Giorgia Meloni and Narendra Modi reaffirmed the central role of research, innovation and large-scale scientific infrastructures within the new Italy–India Special Strategic Partnership. |

Cooperation between Elettra and Indian scientific institutions has been ongoing for more than fifteen years and has led to the joint development and operation of the XRD2 and XPRESS beamlines, among the most productive and highly requested facilities at the Trieste research centre. The Letter of Intent, signed in March 2026, also confirms DST’s support for the Elettra 2.0 programme, which includes the construction of the new µXRD microdiffraction beamline to replace the current XRD2 beamline, as well as the upgrade of the XPRESS beamline. The inclusion of Elettra in the Italy–India Joint Declaration highlights the international relevance of our research centre and the role it plays in fostering long-term scientific cooperation, providing researchers from around the world with access to advanced technologies for the study of materials, energy, the environment and health. |
