In mid-November, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste took part in the 14th edition of the Italy–China Science, Technology and Innovation Week, held between Beijing and Hangzhou. The initiative, opened in the presence of Italy’s Minister for Universities and Research Anna Maria Bernini and China’s Minister of Science and Technology Yin Hejun, brought together more than one hundred scientific institutions from both countries. Among the contributions during the opening session was an address by Caterina Petrillo, President of Area Science Park, focused on the role of research infrastructures within innovation ecosystems.

Within this framework, Enrico Allaria, Coordinator of the International Projects Cluster at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, establishing the new China–Italy Interdisciplinary Center. The agreement, which also involves the National Biodiversity Future Center, sets out a shared platform for collaboration on research infrastructures, advanced technologies, sustainability and talent mobility.

In the following days, Allaria and Penco were hosted by SARI in Shanghai for the unveiling ceremony of the commemorative plaque marking the establishment of the center. During the event, Penco was invited to present our scientific and technological capabilities, illustrating how the facility can contribute to the joint research activities envisaged by the new interdisciplinary initiative.

The mission also included visits to the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility and to the construction site of SHINE, the new Chinese free-electron laser, offering a valuable opportunity to explore potential technical synergies and compare the development of the respective infrastructures. The participation in this initiative strengthens Elettra’s international role and opens new paths for collaboration with Chinese partners in strategic areas of advanced research.
