On November 17-19, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste together with SISSA, ICTP and CNR-Nanotec Lecce, organized the symposium “From Molecular Beams to Nanomedicine: a Tribute to the Scientific Journey of Giacinto Scoles” at the ICTP Leonardo Campus.

The sessions of the conference retraced the stages of Scoles’ scientific journey, from Italy to the Netherlands, to Canada and the US, and then back to Italy, scientifically spanning from the physics of molecular beams to research on self-assembly, DNA nanotechnology, and nanomedicine, always exploring molecular interactions, a theme so dear to him.

The final session, dedicated to his scientific legacy, celebrated the enthusiasm and encouragement he unfailingly offered to the young, the ideas he inspired - in that unique way of doing research that unites intuition and rigor, science and wonder.
The Symposium was certainly a tribute to an exceptional scientist and man, but far from just commemorating the past, it showed repeatedly how Scoles shaped research within Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, in many directions that are alive and flourishing. In fact, besides being known as the founder of the SENIL laboratory (SISSA-Elettra NanoInnovation Lab, now led by Loredana Casalis), he was indeed personally involved in defining the atomic, molecular and optical physics program of the FERMI FEL, and was the force responsible for connecting some of its key figures to it (Carlo Callegari, Frank Stienkemeier).
The workshop welcomed 64 participants, with contributions from researchers affiliated with institutions including Elettra, SISSA, ICTP, University of Trieste, CNR-IOM, CNR-Nanotec, University of Virginia, University of Freiburg, Temple University, University of Padova, Princeton University, Politecnico di Torino, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, IIT, University of Tübingen, University of Genova, University of the Basque Country, U.C. Davis, EPFL, Rurh University Bochum, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, Umeå University, Oak Ridge National Lab, University of Delaware, University of Udine, University of Venezia, University of Sheffield, CRO-Aviano.
