On the occasion of the International Day of Light, on Sunday 17 May 2026, the Immaginario Scientifico science museum in Trieste hosted two events dedicated to research with synchrotron light and free-electron lasers, organised in collaboration with Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste.

The initiative, developed following an invitation from Immaginario Scientifico to explore the world of Elettra and FERMI through two sessions — one in the morning and one in the afternoon — offered visitors the opportunity to experience the Elettra-dedicated space within the museum and discover how light can be used to observe and study matter at the atomic scale.

During the events, researchers Benedetta Marmiroli and Paola Di Pietro explained how the Elettra and FERMI facilities produce light billions of times brighter than the Sun, enabling studies on innovative materials, pharmaceuticals and natural processes, with applications ranging from medicine to energy research.
Particular attention was also dedicated to Elettra 2.0, the synchrotron light source upgrade project that will open new opportunities for the international scientific community.
Throughout the day, visitors also had the opportunity to interact with an original segment of the Elettra storage ring, used to demonstrate the path of electrons through magnets and undulators, and to explain the operation of a synchrotron light source.
