Interview with Galimberti on Elettra’s Energy Transition

Andrea Galimberti, Energy Manager at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, outlined to colleagues from Area Science Park the laboratory’s bold strategy for advancing sustainability.

Central to his presentation was the CHCP trigeneration plant, comprising two units (TGP1 and TGP2), which fully meets the facility’s heating needs and provides around half of its cooling requirements—both critical for building climate control and accelerator operation. The system also delivers an uninterrupted 1 MWe power supply, vital for safeguarding the most sensitive scientific equipment.

Looking ahead, Galimberti highlighted Elettra 2.0 and an ambitious project for a high-efficiency photovoltaic plant, with a planned capacity of 8–10 MWp, to be installed in a nearby quarry area. This initiative aims to further cut reliance on non-renewable energy sources and strengthen the laboratory’s commitment to a sustainable future.
