On April 16–17, 2025, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste hosted the artistic residency Before Second Zero—a bold experiment blending contemporary jazz, live improvisation, and electronic music with cutting-edge science.

Composer Christian Russano spent two days exploring the labs and beamlines of Elettra and FERMI, engaging directly with scientists and collecting sounds, images, and stories. These encounters will fuel a new creative process where the two particle accelerators become more than machines—they’ll emerge as sonic characters, a “fourth instrument” in a musical narrative shaped by physics and imagination.

From the subtle vibrations of matter to the powerful beams of synchrotron light, the residency will serve as the creative foundation for a full-length album inspired by the cosmos, subatomic particles, and the hidden rhythms of the physical world.
Russano, together with Marco Bellafiore (double bass and electronics) and Francesca Remigi (drums), will craft a sound journey where noise, texture, light, and motion are transformed into pulse, structure, and emotion.
The residency offered a unique opportunity to bridge two seemingly distant worlds—science and music. It’s a reminder of the value of bringing artists into research spaces: to spark new perspectives, translate complexity into emotion, and let curiosity flow in both directions. Because sometimes, even synchrotron light can become a source of music.
