On March 12-14th, 2025 Trieste hosted the kick-off meeting of the PACRI project, financed by the European Union and coordinated by Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste.
PACRI (Plasma Accelerator systems for Compact Research Infrastructures) was selected among several competitors of the INFRA-2024-TECH-01-01 call, for the development of new advanced tools and technologies in the field of accelerators for EU research and industry.

The Consortium brings together 25 partner and 1 “associated partner” (PSI), with 19 international Research Laboratories and Universities, including CERN, INFN, CNR, CNRS, DESY and ELI, and 7 major European industries in the fields of power electronics, microwaves, lasers and high-precision mechanics.
PACRI is closely linked to the 2 European projects within the ESFRI programme, EuPRAXIA and ELI, that will benefit from new prototypes for their implementation as European Research Infrastructures.

In addition, PACRI plans to develop key components for the of future compact photon sources.
The project is based on 3 research pillars:
- plasma accelerators, coordinated by INFN (M. Ferrario) and CNRS (B. Cros);
- X-band RF technologies for linacs, coordinated by ELETTRA (G. D’Auria) and CERN (N. Catalan-Lasheras);
- High power and high repetition rate lasers, coordinated by CNR (L.A. Gizzi) and UKRI (M. De Vido).

PACRI started in March 2025 and will last 4 years, with an EU contribution of 10 Million Euro and a nearly 1 Million Euro co-financing from Switzerland.
On March 14th, after the first General Assembly of the Consortium, participants had the chance to visit the Elettra and FERMI lightsources.
