Scientific discoveries: Acynodon between Technology and Palaeontology
![]() |
A major study conducted at the paleontological site of Villaggio del Pescatore, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, has revealed new information on the appearance of the Italian territory at the time of the dinosaurs. This project, a collaboration between the Municipality of Trieste and Zoic s.r.l., led to the extraction and preparation of numerous fossil finds, including those of the rare crocodile Acynodon, a semi-aquatic reptile that lived during the Cretaceous period. |
The research team consists of international experts, including Marco Muscioni and Federico Fanti (National Geographic Explorer) from the FantiLab group at the University of Bologna, Alfio Alessandro Chiarenza from University College London, Flavio Bacchia from Zoic s.r.l., and two researchers from Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, Diego Dreossi and Maurizio Polentarutti. The use of Elettra's advanced technologies played a key role in the detailed analysis of the fossils, including that of Acynodon, allowing a precise reconstruction of the palaeoenvironmental characteristics of the site.
