The international training programme on science diplomacy for CEI Member States made a stop at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, which hosted one of the sessions. The initiative, aimed at professionals from the scientific, diplomatic and institutional spheres, brought together 40 participants including delegates, speakers and organisers.
The day opened with a visit to FERMI, giving participants a close look at the operation of the free-electron laser and at the role played by major photon-based research infrastructures in international science. This was followed by the round table “The Role of Research Infrastructures in Science Diplomacy,” moderated by Simone Arnaldi (University of Trieste). Speakers included:
Giorgio Paolucci, Chief Scientific Officer at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, who presented the emblematic case of SESAME as a model of scientific cooperation in a geopolitically complex region;
Ornela De Giacomo, Deputy Executive Director of CERIC-ERIC, who illustrated CERIC’s cooperative, multilateral framework through the daily experience of a pan-European consortium;
Salvatore La Rosa, Director of the Research and Innovation Division at AREA Science Park, who discussed ERICs as structural instruments supporting scientific collaboration and innovation across Europe.

The discussion underscored how research infrastructures act as catalysts for science diplomacy, fostering spaces of cooperation, exchange and capacity-building that transcend national boundaries. In the afternoon, the programme continued at AREA Science Park’s Padriciano campus with a second round table dedicated to Italian science diplomacy, marking the official conclusion of the initiative. |
