New Pathway Completed Between Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and Basovizza
Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste has recently completed the restoration of the pedestrian path connecting the center of Basovizza with the Area Science Park complex and the research center. The project, carried out in collaboration with the Municipality of Trieste, involved widening the path, restoring traditional dry-stone walls typical of the Karst region, paving the route, and installing nighttime lighting. This new path provides a direct and safe connection, surrounded by the greenery of the Karst, improving accessibility for the many researchers, scientists, and guests who visit the campus daily. According to the architect and project director, Prof. Maurizio Bradaschia, the path is much more than a simple infrastructure: it is a work that merges art, architecture, and science. "The decorations along the path," says Bradaschia, "evoke Bruno Munari's Negativo-Positivo series, playing with the dialectic of presence and absence, and Lucio Fontana's spatialism, which explores new spatial dimensions through the act of cutting. We also wanted to pay tribute to the geometric reinterpretation of Gabbeh oriental rugs, creating a parallel between abstract forms and decoration." |

Trieste, Bradaschia continues, with its scientific and cultural tradition, is the ideal context for this architectural and cultural hybridization. "The path reflects our desire to blend the precision of research with the abstract expressiveness of art, making the city not only a meeting point for scientific worlds but also a symbol of cultural fusion between East and West. The improved accessibility, immersed in the Karst greenery, not only facilitates daily movements but also invites visitors to reflect on how art and science can harmoniously coexist in a shared space." In this sense, the restoration of the path is not just a functional intervention but a true cultural and landscape project, celebrating Trieste's uniqueness as a crossroads of nature, technology, and art.
The project was funded and implemented by Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste as part of an agreement with the Municipality of Trieste, which will take care of its management, public lighting, and routine maintenance in the future.
