Elettra 2.0 Launched: A New Light for Synchrotron Science

Tuesday, July 8 marked the official presentation of Elettra 2.0, attended by local authorities and the press, as a meaningful moment of sharing the beginning of a new phase for an innovative initiative that is the result of collaborative, multidisciplinary work.
The day began with a visit to the construction site, accompanied by the Regional Councillor for Labour, Training, Education, Research, Universities, and Family of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Alessia Rosolen, the President of AREA Science Park, Caterina Petrillo, and the Director of the Central Unit for Research and Innovation, Ketty Segatti. The small group was guided not only by Prof. Franciosi, but also by colleagues Emanuel Karantzoulis, Director of the Elettra 2.0 Project, Deborah Baron, Elettra 2.0 Site Manager, and Roberto Visintini, Head of the Removal&Installation activities for Elettra 2.0.
Following the brief site visit, the group moved to the new exhibition area at FERMI, where they joined other guests, including the Councillor for Social Policies of the Municipality of Trieste, Massimo Tognolli, and Serena Tonel, Deputy Mayor of Trieste.
After a quick introduction by President Franciosi, a video was shown documenting the shutdown of the machine, which took place during an internal event on July 2 in front of hundreds of employees— a symbolic and celebratory moment for the entire Elettra community. This was followed by the first presentation of the 3D rendering of the new light source and the layout of the future beamlines, a tangible sign of the ongoing technological and scientific evolution.
The ceremony continued with official speeches: Councillor Alessia Rosolen opened the session, followed by Caterina Petrillo, who highlighted the central role of Elettra within Trieste’s scientific ecosystem. Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel emphasized the importance of Elettra for the city as a center of scientific excellence recognized internationally, while Councillor Tognolli drew attention to the extraordinary human commitment behind this cutting-edge technology.
The event concluded with remarks from scientific partners: Federico Boscherini, Director of CNR-IOM, and Cinzia Giannini, Director of the CNR Institute of Crystallography, who both reaffirmed their willingness and enthusiasm to strengthen future collaborations thanks to the new Elettra.
The day ended with a press conference for local media outlets— an opportunity to delve deeper into the key aspects of the project and answer questions from the press about the future of research and scientific infrastructure in the region.
