The fourth edition of the IAEA 'Training Workshop on Synchrotron Technologies and Techniques and their Applications' took place from the 21st to the 25th of October 2024, at Elettra.
Organized by IAEA and Elettra, the event provided the participants with the opportunity to attend lectures and to engage in hands-on tutorials on three different beamlines. The students, eight researchers from six different countries, could benefit from lectures delivered by researchers from Elettra, AGH - Akademia Gorniczo-Hutnicza, and IAEA.
The program showcased the capabilities of synchrotron radiation, covering key techniques such as x-ray absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence, and diffraction. A range of applications were explored, including (but not limited to) environmental science, cultural heritage and materials science.
During the hands-on tutorials, Elettra staff of the XAFS, XRF, and MCX beamlines guided the participants towards a successful use of synchrotron radiation for different kinds of experiments.
The program also featured a special session on proposal writing, including a tip&trick lecture followed by ample time for the participants to draft their own proposals.

Elettra and IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) have a long-standing collaboration. Since 2005 Elettra is "IAEA Collaborating Centre” and endorses the Agency’s activities in disseminating scientific and technical culture and promoting international networks among the research communities worldwide. IAEA also is a Partner of the XRF beamline at Elettra since 2012.
