On February 11, 2025, on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste renewed its commitment to gender equality in research through a series of initiatives aimed at younger generations. The event provided a concrete opportunity to raise awareness of the gender gap in STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), which remains significant despite recent progress. According to data, women make up only 33% of researchers worldwide, and in Italy, they account for just 39.9% of students enrolled in STEM courses.

At the heart of the activities was the SHE SCIENCE project, organized in collaboration with SHARPER - European Researchers’ Night, which brought five Elettra researchers into four high schools in Trieste. Through personal testimonies and in-depth discussions, the scientists shared their career paths, addressed the main challenges women face in scientific professions, and highlighted the opportunities available in this field.

In the afternoon, the research center welcomed a group of university students and interested participants for a guided tour of the laboratories and direct discussions with researchers specializing in fields ranging from accelerator physics to structural biology, from applied spectroscopy to materials engineering. These initiatives are part of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste’s three-year Gender Equality Plan, which aims to overcome stereotypes and systemic barriers through concrete and long-term actions. Science needs the talent of everyone: ensuring equal opportunities means investing in a fairer, more innovative, and inclusive future.

The researchers who participated in the initiative include: Laura Badano, an expert in particle accelerators and projects on hadron therapy and Free Electron Lasers; Ilaria Carlomagno, specialized in condensed matter physics and spectroscopy applied to cultural heritage; Laura Foglia, an expert in applied physics and laser technologies; Benedetta Marmiroli, a materials engineer with expertise in microdevices and nanotechnologies; Cristina Modolo, specialized in the management and development of analytical technologies for industry; Barbara Sartori, an applied physicist with experience in spectroscopy and advanced materials; and Paola Storici, a biochemist and head of the structural biology laboratory at Elettra.
