Project Clusters and Groups
Elettra - Sincrotrone Trieste has adopted a matrix-type of organization.
There are five Strategic Initiatives, which correspond to distinct Project Clusters: Elettra, FERMI, Research, Technology Platform and the International Projects, grouped together based on the complementarity of the different project goals.
A Project is a corporate initiative that has clear and measurable objectives through appropriate indicators (key performance indicators, or KPIs), a "client" (internal or external) who benefits from it, a precise time duration, a series of intermediate achievements (milestones) clearly identified and which allow the control of the temporal development, a need for financial, technical and human resources planned from the beginning and for whose implementation the responsibility is entrusted to a Project Manager.
An Activity is a recurring corporate initiative, often administrative or internal service in nature, and as such, not easily managed as a Project. Examples include initiatives for maintenance, inventory, procurement, budgeting, etc. They are organized and managed within the Group where the largest number of human resources required for their implementation are located. The relevant Group Coordinator assigns responsibility for this to an Activity Manager selected within the Group.
