Latest results on phonon and phonon-like excitations at the ESRF

ABSTRACT
A variety of TR and DR applications for purposes of particle beam characterisations
is considered. Basic principles and some practical
details are discussed. Experimental implementations are illustrated
by examples from measurements performed at Tesla Test Facility (TTF)
at
DESY.
The two beamlines dedicated to inelastic x-ray scattering studies with
very high energy resolution at the ESRF are operational, and routinely
used
in many areas of science to study the microscopic atom dynamics. Studies
can be performed on the lattice dynamics of small single crystals of HTc
superconductors, where a striking phonon softening has been observed.
Extensive studies on water and ice crystals at high pressure provide
strong indication for a liquid-liquid phase transition in water. Existence
of multiple relaxation processes have been deduced in HF. High pressure
studies in iron points out indications for the presence of impurities
in earth inner core. These results and other will be briefly presented
and
discussed.
