Abstract
Apparently very different systems as High-Gain Free Electron Laser
(FEL) and Collective Atomic Recoil Laser (CARL) exhibit similar behaviors,
showing self-bunching and exponential enhancement of the emitted radiation.
However, both FEL and CARL can be described by the same model of classical
equations. These equations are extended to the quantum domain describing
the particle`s motion by a Schroedinger equation coupled to a self-consistent
radiation field. Using a proper scaling, the model depends on a single
collective parameter r. We demonstrate that the classical model is recovered
in the limit r>>1 showing that Wigner function associated to the Schroedinger
equation obeys to the classical Vlasov equation. On the contrary, for r<1,
a new quantum regime is obtained in which both FELs and CARLs exhibit a
dynamical behavior completely different than the classical one. Our theory
applies also to a Ions beam as well to a Bose-Einstein condensate.
Particular attention will be given to quantum and propagation effect
on the high gain regime, SASE and harmonic generation and to possible applications
to ions beams and to a Bose Einstein Condensate.
