Biomedical applications of Raman and infrared spectroscopic imaging

Christoph Krafft
Universita\' di Trieste

Abstract
Raman and infrared spectroscopic imaging combine the high information content of vibrational spectroscopy with lateral resolution in the low micrometer range. The advantages of these methods have been utilized in numerous medical and biological applications. The presentation gives an overview of the experimental techniques and multivariate data analyses and describes first results: (i)Diagnosis of primary and secondary brain tumors. (ii)Monitoring stem cell differentiation on the single cell level. (iii)Studies on stress induced changes in single cells at the subcellular level. (iv)Detection of brain metastases in a mouse model. An outlook will be given how the high brightness of synchrotron infrared radiation can improve the quality of data.
