X-ray micro- and nano-spectroscopies at ESRF

Murielle Salome
ESRF

Abstract
Micro-spectroscopy techniques offer a very powerful tool for the investigation of both location and chemical speciation of trace elements in samples. They have now spread over a very large range of user communities with applications in scientific areas as different as biology, geochemistry, archaeology or environmental sciences. The subject of this talk will be to present the micro-spectroscopy activities developed in the X-ray Microscopy and Micro-analysis facility of ESRF, which includes the ID21 / ID22 / ID18f and ID22NI beamlines. Part of the talk will be devoted to the technical presentation of the beamlines with special emphasis on the latest technical developments in progress, among them Kirkpatrick-Baez focussing optics, multi-element fluorescence detectors and sample environment developments. Then selected scientific applications will be presented. An obvious trend for micro-spectroscopy is towards nano-scale analysis and multi-modal analysis strategy. An overview of future nano-spectroscopy beamlines in the context of the ESRF Upgrade Programme will be presented.
