Soft x-ray microscopy at Stony Brook

Chris Jacobsen
Department of Physics, SUNY at Stony Brook

Abstract
Recent activities in soft x-ray microscopy by the Stony Brook group at
Brookhaven lab are described. In collaboration with Lucent Technologies
Bell Labs, we have fabricated zone plates in nickel with outer zone widths
as small as 20 nm. We have begun to operate a cryo microscope which is
able to image frozen hydrated biological specimens; this has yielded
surprising results on radiation sensitivity and on preparation methods.
Applications of x-ray microscopy for cell labeling, for cell science, and
for exobiology (including the mars meteorite) will also be discussed.
