Sub-picosecond non-linear photoemission from solid surfaces

F. Parmigiani
Politecnico di Milano

Abstract
Non-linear photoelectric emission from Cu and W is investigated by
sub-picosecond laser pulses. Using a pump and probe technique, total
yield correlation measurements free from space charge saturation are
obtained. The effects of heating of the conduction electrons are shown.
The analysis presented clarifies the consequences of a transient
non-equilibrium temperature differences between electrons and the
lattice on the correlation trace, confirming for W the presence of a
thermally assisted photoemission mechanism.
