Abstract
This talk presents the concepts of survey and alignment steps from the planning of a new light source to its operation. It is organized in an chronologic matter and emphasizes the monumentation stage and its impact on the installation and final mapping of components. It is illustrated by the LCLS case. The strong requirement for magnet placement and the long and skinny housing are two main challenges that are pushing for an innovative approach to the classical solution of accelerator alignment.
