The Future of Accelerator-based Science

William Barletta
U.S. Particle Accelerator School & Dept. of Physics, MIT and UCLA

The past year has seen several major examinations of worldwide of the investment strategies for fundamental physics. In the U.S. the recent Snowmass study of future high energy physics and examinations by advisory panels of the Dept. of Energy have identified the capabilities that will be needed to advance accelerator-based science over a broad range of scientific disciplines in a highly competitive global environment. This talk will review the findings of these studies for high-energy physics and photon science and offer a personal view of R&D issues and priorities to maximize the reach of accelerator-based science over the next two decades. It emphasizes vibrant research opportunities and exciting physics and technological challenges.
