Gas phase design and synthesis of nanoparticles
Nanoparticles by Design Unit, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology-Japan
Abstract
Nanoparticles are fascinating microscopic objects that have the potential for important applications in a wide range of fields. One of the issues that has plagued the application of nanoparticles has been the inability to develop nanoparticles with sufficient uniformity and prescribed characteristics to be utilized with optimal success.
Heterogeneous gas-phase condensation is a promising method of producing uniform nanoparticles with tailored composition and microstructure but also intrinsically introduces greater complexity to the nucleation process and growth kinetics. Herein, I will talk about the design and synthesis of nanoparticles using gas-aggregated co-sputtering from independent but neighboring source targets, and demonstrate some applications.
