Chemical characterization of composite materials

Caratterizzazione chimica di materiali compositi

The composite of Ti6Al4V alloy, reinforced by unidirectional SiC fibres coated with graphite and produced by roll diffusion bonding (RDB), is a promising material for aeronautical applications including turbine parts that operate at temperatures in the range 500–600 °C. For these components, the stability of mechanical properties is one of the most important requirements.
Since the stability is mostly determined by fibre–matrix interface, the interface modifications after prolonged working time must be strictly controlled.

Elettra’s contribution
Microchemical characteristics of the interface between carbon (coating of SiC fibres) and metal (Ti6Al4V) have been investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), multipoint atomic emission spectroscopy (AES) and photoemission spectromicroscopy (at Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) microscopy beamline of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste). The results obtained revealed that the composition of the fibre–metal interface is similar to that of the composites produced by conventional method of hot isostatic pressing (HIP).
Since the microstructural features of Ti6Al4V–SiCf composites, realised by RDB and HIP processes, are found to be similar, it is concluded that the RDB process must be preferred for its lower cost and production time.

Facility: ESCA Microscopy Beamline.
