Safety
Before accessing the BACH beamline area and operating any instrumentation and tool of the beamline BACH and its endstations, users must read, accept and sign the Safety rules and precautions, and ask the beamline staff in case of doubt and please signal any misfunction or problem.
- Radioactive compounds
- Biologically hazardous classified samples such as virus and other infectious species, genetically modified bacteria or bio-organisms, live matter, tissues, organs, or other matter of animal or human origin, (samples with biosafety level 2 or higher, GMO excluded).
- Any steel corrosive, pyrophoric, highly toxic or dangerous gas or mixtures is not accepted at this beamline. Only gases available in lecture bottles/minican can be used (upon previous request and approval).
- Nanoparticles (1-100 nm) if (a) Nanoparticles are not embedded into a matrix or not firmly bonded to a substrate or not properly filled in sealed confinement or (b) Nanoparticles are in dry powdered form: the manipulation on the beamline and/or related laboratory of loosely powder is STRICTLY forbidden or (c) Handling the sample (e.g. while fixing the sample on the sample holder) can generate powdered nanoparticles, toxic particulate matter suspensions on air or (d) Nanoparticles are in a liquid or gas suspension to be processed into a powder
- Hazardous materials producing toxic or highly contaminant particulate matter suspensions on air
- Highly contaminant low-vapor pressure molecules or compounds degrading the ultra-high vacuum conditioning and cleanness of instrumentation.
- Illegal substances and/or samples: (f.i. drugs, unregulated agricultural or food samples, etc.) unless it is explicitly proved that it is allowed by Italian regulations.
This list is not comprehensive; it only indicates the experimental conditions and sample characteristics that could not be accepted due to technical and/or safety reasons. The acceptance of any materials (including equipment) is subjected to the availability of all required safety conditions and protective equipment.

On Proposal Submission
We invite users and collaborators to discuss their proposals with the beamline local contacts well in advance before the submission deadline. This is crucial for a careful assessment of the experiment feasibility and may result in an improvement of the proposal. Please read carefully our guidelines for proposal submission. We invite users interested in installing a bulky piece of equipment (such as an entire experimental station) which takes a long time to assemble and dismount to discuss their project with the beamline local contacts well in advance before the submission deadline. Elettra accepts a limited number of long term projects. These are allocations of beam time over a two-year period. The proposer has to explicitly declare that the instrumentation will be at Elettra for the whole time of the long term project and available to other users. Publication guidelines
Users who submit a proposal for the CNR-BACH beamline accept the following rules.
1) Users will give proper credit to beamline and staff members who gave active support to the experiment and participated to the measurements in any publication and presentation reporting data taken at the beamline. Evental authorship must be discussed and agreed upon at an early stage with all those involved.
2) Any paper or draft reporting data taken at the CNR-BACH beamline should be sent to the BACH Local Contact BEFORE the paper has been submitted.
3) The authors must mention the instrument and the "CNR" "BACH beamline" in the paper or acknowledgement.
4) The papers which are based on results obtained from an experiment funded and supported (e.g. by the European projects, ICTP or NFFA) must mention this in the acknowledgement.
5) All publications that are produced based on results obtained at BACH beamline should be registered by the aid of the VUO.

Guidelines for Proposal Submission
When to apply
The Call for Proposals deadline occurs twice a year, on March 15 and September 15. The exact dates are advertised on this website. Peer Review evaluationThe proposals are reviewed by an independent Panel, the Elettra Proposal Review Panel (PRP), after their feasibility has been assessed by the beamline coordinators. The PRP is composed of experts in various fields of synchrotron radiation research evaluates the scientific merit of the proposals. The main criteria for evaluation are the following: expected impact of the experiments, topicality, probability to produce one or more publications on highly cited scientific journals, potential to help solving important technologically or socially relevant problems, possible development of a new application of synchrotron radiation. FundingIn order to find out the latest news on the financial support options that are available please visit the Elettra User Office web pages. Partial support schemes for Italian users are currently available. A dedicated scheme for non EC members is provided by the ICTP. Unfortunately, EC support is currently UNAVAILABLE. Submission on VUOProposals must be uploaded and submitted on the Elettra Virtual Unified Office (VUO). Before writing a proposal, you and your collaborators must register on the VUO. Every proposal needs to have clear and achievable goals. This means that the proposal must address a well-focused scientific problem or a debated, unanswered issue in the literature. It is not recommended to start studying a new system during the proposal, without carrying out the necessary preparation work. In other words, better not to come here fishing for unexpected intriguing results. The experimental plan must be realistic and well organized, capable to deliver achievable goals. |
Long Term ProjectsElettra accepts a limited number of long term projects. These are allocations of beam time over a two-year period. Please, click the box "long term project" in the proposal form. The long term status will be considered only for those proposals for which a bulky piece of equipment (such as an entire experimental station) which takes a long time to assemble and dismount is to be transferred to Elettra for the project. The proposer has to explicitly declare that the instrumentation will be at Elettra for the whole time of the LT project and available to other users. Please note that proposals for long term projects will be judged as such on the basis of the above definition by the review committee, together with their scientific merit. Proposers awarded long term status will not be required to submit new proposals relating to the project every six months; however, an interim report after the first year of the project will be required. Please note that for LT projects experimental reports will be required after EACH allocation period. Failing to provide such reports will result in the termination of the project. Please note: in the "Shifts Required" box please insert the total number of shifts required for all 4 semesters. It is is highly recommended to discuss in great detail with the beamline scientist in charge the feasibility of long term projects well before the submission! Feedback from the local contactsIn order to be able to get back to you with feedback on the proposal feasibility, we warmly encourage you to upload your proposal on VUO at least one week before the deadline. Interaction with the local contacts is highly recommended. Don't hesitate to discuss with us the experimental plan in great detail. |
Experiment feasibilityRead carefully the information on the BACH web pages. Consider that there are some important restrictions on what can be evaporated in the main experimental chamber, as well as to the maximum gas pressure that is allowed during measurements. New instrumental developments or installations need special and careful preparation. They have to be organized in close coordination with the beamline scientists in charge. Sample suitabilityThe Samples must be conductive for photoemission measurements, but it may be insulating or conducting for x-ray emission measurements. The sample holder can host one or more samples in a square area of about 25x25 mm. The samples can be fixed by conductive UHV compatible glue, UHV-compatible carbon/copper tape, by Mo clamps (up to 4), or it can be sandwiched between the sample holder body and a Mo/Stainless steel cap with one hole of different sizes and shapes. For Si, Ge and SiC the sample should be cut in a rectangular piece (ideal: 3.5 mm x 8 mm. However, it can fit also 3-4 mm x 7-9 mm). Important: if the sample needs to be prepared in situ, the sample must be sent to the contact person at the BACH beamline, arranging the delivery so that they can be mounted and transferred in the preparation chamber at least 10 days before the experimental run in order to properly degass the sample holder. When annealing is required, the sample will be typically holded between two plates (one below and one above, with one hole of the proper size and shape to hold the sample). Please specify if there is incompatibility (e.g. alloy formation during annealing) with any material possibly used for the sample holder plate. We typically use: Mo, Ta or stainless steel. If you have special requests please contact your local contact well in advace and if necessary provide a 0.1-0.125 mm plate of the material. |
After your proposal is accepted
Scheduling accepted proposalsThe beamline coordinator takes care of contacting all of the users whose proposals have been accepted, following the rank indicated by the Review Panel. We try to arrange the beamtime calendar keeping into account the experiment requirements and your specific needs. Sending us your instrumentationDuring the scheduling of the various proposals, we carefully check with you whether we have all the necessary equipment for experiments. If something is missing, we make specific agreements so that you send us what is needed in time for the experiments (please follow the instructions given in the contacts section). Typically, we need to mount your Knudsen cells or evaporators, or replace the evaporant in one of ours. It is not uncommon that we need to receive your apparatus at least a month in advance. This happens because we can bake the system only during machine shutdowns. |
Preparation of the experimentsIn the case of complex experiments, e.g. experiments that require lengthy preparation, agreements can be made for you to begin to work a few days earlier than the official beginning of the beamtime. This might be useful when in-situ sample preparation is needed, or for the calibration of evaporators, or if complex instrumentation needs to be installed. If you need the Chemical Support Laboratory, please request it through VUO and fill the User Declaration Form for the Use of the Support Lab which must be signed by the Head of (user) Department of Institute before the beamtime

Before your arrival
The user office webpages offer you advice on several topics regarding your staying at Elettra, including accommodation, car rental and how to reach the Elettra site. Important note concerning fundingFunding agencies normally refund expenses in the time interval one day prior and after the beamtime. Thus, in the case you arrive earlier, your expenses ARE NOT COVERED. We invite you to check this with the Elettra User Office.Fill the Access Request in advance!Most importantly, don't forget to fill in the Access Request from. Timing for the submission of the Access Request varies according to Users Categories: General Users, Research Team Members and Collaborators must submit their Access Form at least two weeks before the experiment. Trieste City Bus Lines Timetabe
City Bus Lines 39 and 51 connect the Railway station to Elettra or Basovizza; There are regular city service buses that travel from the central railway station to Elettra laboratory which is located about 10 km from Trieste centre.
From Trieste Autostazione get accross the square and take BUS N. 51 (Trieste Trasporti) in front of the "Unicredit" bank. Bus stop is near the traffic light (point B in the map). Also, bus N. 39 has some rides that arrive to ST (check timetables), otherwise the nearest stop is in Basovizza, 1.5 km from ST.
Ticket fare: €1.10 (one way). Can be bought in the "Tabacchi" news kiosks or at the automatic ticket machine in the main square, in front of the train station main entrance.
Ride takes 20 to 25 min approximately.
Note that there is also a coach service (coach number 51) which connects Trieste Airport Ronchi dei Legionari to Trieste Bus and Railway station (Fare 3.25 euro, the ticket can be purchased at the airport). Please note: Both buses (from the airport to Trieste and from Trieste to Basovizza) are number 51 but they belong to different companies!
