Corrugated C-based nanostructures
Starting from buckyball shaped Br-corannulene molecules, corrugated C-based nanostructures -in which the natural concavity of the precursor molecule is maintained- are formed on Ag(110). This article is part of the themed collection: 2018 PCCP HOT Articles

We have studied the self-assembly and oligomerization of Br-corannulene (C20H9Br) on Ag(110). We find that C20H9Br monomers can be catalytically dimerized on a noble metal substrate, forming dimeric organometallic structures already at room temperature. Extended 1D, covalently bound C-based nanostructures with corrugated ribbon-shape can be formed upon annealing. These results indicate that the controlled growth of low-dimension carbon based structures, such as graphene with topological defects can be achieved by surface-assisted polymerization of functionalized, non-planar polyaromatic molecules.
